In his books he combined theories and elements from psychology, philosophy and spirituality to inspire his audience. Who is Wayne Dyer? His biography and background

Wayne Dyer was born in Detroit, Michigan, the youngest of three sons of Melvin Lyle and Hazel Irene Dyer. Wayne had two brothers, David and Dennis. Father Melvin left the family early in his life, when Wayne was three years old. Mother Hazel then raised the children alone.

The best-selling, self-help book author, Wayne Dyer, died about a month ago, August 29, 2015. When I first heard the news, I searched the Web for details, but I found only a couple of postings other than the announcement from his family on Facebook. It took the mainstream media several days to start publishing stories about Dyer's life and death.

One of the early postings on Dyer's death contained a number of positive comments about his work, but also contained a few negative remarks. "Dyer belonged in Granola land because he was a fruit, a nut, and a flake."

"I found this guy really annoying... reiterating a few simple basic ideas over 30 books and duping people while making him millions."

What is it about a best-selling author's work that prompted such a negative reaction? Today I offer my own thoughts on what we might make of Dyer's work

Wayne Walter Dyer was born in Detroit, Michigan to Hazel Vollick and Melvin Dyer. Dyer spent much of his childhood in orphanages and foster care after his alcoholic father abandoned the family of three boys and until his mother remarried. He began paid work at the age of eight, delivering newspapers and mowing lawns.

At the end of high school, Dyer joined the navy, serving four years.

He was then the first in his family to go to university, earning three degrees, including a doctorate in educational counseling, from Wayne State University in Detroit.

Dyer taught first at Pershing High School in Detroit before becoming a school counselor at Mercy High School in Farmington Hills, Michigan.

In 1976, Dyer was teaching at St John’s University in New York. His lectures were popular and he was approached to document his theories. His first book, Your Erroneous Zones (1976) hit the best seller lists.

Dyer eventually quit his teaching job and began
