The Shadow of War Looms Over the Company’s Growth
Spurred on by its acclaimed products, the company builds a second factory, but everything is reduced to ashes following two air raids.
With its spray guns and air compressors garnering acclaim for their excellent performance, the company continued to ramp up production to meet market demand. In 1936, it leased land of about 500 tsubo (1 tsubo being roughly equal to 3.3 square meters) in Shimo-Maruko, Ohta Ward, on which it built a second factory. By June 1940, all production facilities had been moved to Shimo-Maruko, leaving only the headquarters’ sales office in Ebisu, where the first factory had been. Also, as the company was incorporated as a limited partnership, its name was changed to Iwata Spray Coating Equipment Seisakusho, Ltd. While the company was enjoying steady growth, however, the shadows of war began to loom over its activities. Satoru Iwata (岩田 聡, December 6, 1959 – July 11, 2015) was the fourth President and CEO of Nintendo, promoted in 2002 by the previous President, Hiroshi Yamauchi, before his retirement the same year[1], making Iwata the first president to not be related to Yamauchi's family. Iwata was known for his contributions to the Nintendo subsidiary, HAL Laboratory, Inc., and after being made president was attributed to the success of the Nintendo GameCube, Wii, Nintendo DS, and the latter console's launch title, Brain Age.[1][2][3] He was succeeded by Tatsumi Kimishima following a Nintendo board meeting on September 14, 2015 two months after Iwata passed away.

Satoru Iwata (Japanese: 岩田 聡, Hepburn: Iwata Satoru, December 6, 1959 – July 11, 2015) was a Japanese businessman, video game programmer and gamer. He was the fourth president and CEO of Nintendo. He is widely regarded as someone who helped make video games liked by a wider audience by focusing on making entertaining games rather than advanced hardware.
On July 11, 2015, Iwata died of bile duct cancer at age 55. Iwata was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2015 Golden Joystick Awards and the 2016 DICE Awards.
Early life
[change | change source]Iwata was born and raised in Sapporo, Japan on December 6, 1959. His father was a municipal mayor.[2]
Iwata got his first computer, a Commodore PET, in 1978. He took the machine apart, and he studied the machine because he wanted to understand it.
