Scottish artist and illustrator (1880–1969)
Sir William Russell Flint (4 April 1880 – 30 December 1969) was a Scottish artist and illustrator who was known especially for his watercolours of women. He also worked in oils, tempera, and printmaking.[1]
Biography
Flint was born in Edinburgh on 4 April 1880 and was educated at Daniel Stewart's College and then Edinburgh Institution.[2] From 1894 to 1900 Flint was apprenticed as a lithographic draughtsman while taking classes at the Royal Institute of Art, Edinburgh.[3] From 1900 to 1902 he worked as a medical illustrator in London while studying part-time at the Heatherley School of Fine Art.[4] He furthered his art education by studying independently at the British Museum. He was an artist for The Illustrated London News from 1903 to 1909, and produced illustrations for editions of several books, including H Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines (1907 edition),[5]W. S. Gilbert's Savoy Operas (1909),[6] Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte Late in 1912, he and his wife went to Italy where they rented a studio in Rome. William was commissioned in the First World War and became Admiralty Assistant Overseer of Airships. Post World War I, William Russell Flint´s artistic career began to flourish. •

There he discovered a local model called Peppina from Anticoli Corrado in the Sabine Hills.
This girl, with her rural charm and beauty, was such a perfect subject for William that he soon became enchanted by the freedom of the Sabine Hills and the peasant girls who lived there.
Far removed from city culture, William was so inspired by the imagery and drama of their lives that even time spent in Florence and Venice could not surpass his discovery in rural Italy.
This took him back to his native Scotland, where in 1919 he painted a tiny watercolour called Hilda´s Bonnet on the linen of a fragment of HM Airship 24 which he had previously commanded.
