St. Gemma was born Maria Gemma Umberta Pia Galgani on March 12, 1878. She was born in the hamlet of Borgo Nuovo, in the provincial town of Capannori. She was the fifth of eight children. Her father Enrico Galgani was a prosperous pharmacist. Her parents moved the family to the Tuscan city of Lucca shortly after her birth to improve the children’s education. Soon after her mother contracted tuberculosis and Gemma was placed in the care of a private nursery school, where she was determined to be a highly intelligent child. Five years later her mother died from tuberculosis as well as her oldest brother Carlo, and her brother Gino who was studying for the Priesthood. She also lost her youngest sister Giulia at a young age.
Gemma was sent to a Catholic boarding school in Lucca run by the Sisters of St. Zita. She excelled in French, Arithmetic and Music. Gemma was allowed at the age of nine to receive her first Holy Communion. She wanted to become a Nun with the Passionists, but because of poor health

Saint Gemma Galgani
A spiritual daughter of St. Paul of the Cross, Gemma Galgani’s life carries a great message for all Passionists. To be called to be a Passionist is a calling “to suffer many things,” like Jesus himself who came not to be served but to serve and to offer his life for his brothers and sisters.
Gemma (meaning “gem”) was the first, girl child born to the traditional, Catholic Galgani family on March 12, 1878, near Lucca. Inspired by her mother’s teachings, Gemma developed a love for Jesus and a strong devotion to prayer at a very young age. Little Gemma lost her mother when she was only eight years old. Soon after this event, Gemma experienced a long and serious illness. As her conditioned worsened, she developed spinal curvature and ev

All About St. Gemma Galgani
St. Gemma Galgani (1878-1903) was canonized by the Venerable Pius XII in 1940. She was a tertiary of the Passionists and was moved by their spirituality of continuous meditation on the Passion of the Savior to lead a life of prayer and penance. Her mystical experiences taught her the value of suffering in union with Christ crucified, and she endured calumnies and opposition even from members of her own family. Demonic persecutions were also not lacking. Her confessor, the Venerable Germanus, a Passionist priest, wrote her biography, and her cause of canonization proceeded, overcoming many obstacles.
The popularity of her veneration has increased over the years, and her insights have been a consolation to many. Her body is enshrined in Lucca in Italy where she spent most of her life, but her heart is enshrined in the Passionist church in Madrid in Spain. The words that follow here are from her brief autobiography, written by order of her confessor; they are characteristic of her spirit and teaching:
My greatest affliction was not being able to love J
