Born on May 22, 1974 as Stéphane Hamidou Doukouré in Yamoussoukro, the capital of Côte d'Ivoire, it was under the pseudonym Douk Saga that the general public came to know the Ivorian. After graduating in computer science in Abidjan, he moved to Paris in the early 2000s to pursue his academic and professional career. There, he met many of his compatriots, including Molaré, Lino Versace and Boro Sanguy, with whom he joined forces under the banner of La Jet Set. Together, they invented new dance steps in Parisian discotheques and gradually shaped what became known as coupé-décalé, which was exported to Côte d'Ivoire. Stéphane Hamidou Doukouré (22 May 1974 – 12 October 2006), known professionally as "Douk Saga", was an Ivorian singer and the creator of Coupé-décalé music style alongside a dancing step.^[1] He popularized the music genre all over Africa and Europe, his most popular song in early 2000's was "Sagacité".^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]

Music career

Douk Saga's musical style and dancing steps remained history in Europe and Africa. He was the creator of Coupé-décalé music style, popularized with its own dancing step, involving hand gests like "Afuka Fuka" and also had a flamboyant lifestyle.^[3] In 2000's during Abidjan political crisis, Douk Saga's music was used to substitute war in Abidjan cum "Coupe" means (cut-off),^[6] the music genre had been widely received worldwide by music lovers.^[7]

Douk Saga is one of the main exponents of the latest dance craze from Abidjan, the « Coupé Décalé ». He is seen as the creator of this variant of zouglou, at the moment very popular in Africa and among the African diaspora. What is Coupé Décalé? Musically speaking, it is a variant of zouglou, often mixed by DJs using Congolese influences such as the « atalaku ». The lyrics are often composed of a chain of riming words, repeating words as "couper-decaler, travailler, sagacité". Besides from being a music style, it is also a particular way of dancing. But above all, it is a particular life style.
