Sade (“sha-day”) was born with the name Helen in Nigeria to a British mother and Nigerian father. The name “Helen” being alien to Nigerian ears, they called her “Sade”, a variant of her middle name. Her parents divorced when she was an infant, her mother raising her in Britain. Sade worked as a model and fashion designer for several years, and was involved in designing outfits that Spandau Ballet wore on their first American tour. But her heart was in music, and at age 21 Sade joined Arriva, a Latin-influenced funk group, and co-wrote “Smooth Operator” with the band’s guitarist, Ray St. John. Without a recording contract, though, the tune was heard only in nightclubs where Arriva performed.

Sade Adu (born 16 January 1959), born Helen Folasade Adu, is the frontwoman and lead vocalist of the popular English group Sade. She was born in Ibadan, Nigeria of a Nigerian father and English mother, then moved to England. She was raised in Clacton-on-Sea, and moved to Camden Town, London, in 1984. She initially was the vocalist for two UK funk groups, Arriva and Pride, before launching the group that bears her name with an appearance on the Channel 4variety showThe Tube in 1984. Sade has also appeared in films such as Absolute Beginners (1986), to the soundtrack of which she made contributions, and on the Braziliansoap operaUm Anjo Caiu do C�u.
Her name is pronounced roughly 'shah-day' (IPA / ʃɑːdeɪ/, SAMPA or Kirshenbaum /SA:deI/).

English band Sade have released six studio albums, one live album, two compilation albums, two extended plays, 23 singles, six video albums, 20 music videos, and have achieved four top 20 singles on the main chart of both the US and the UK.
Following a brief stint of studying fashion design and modelling, Sade Adu began singing back up for a band named Pride. Later, she and some members left Pride and formed the band Sade in 1982. The name Sade represents the entire group, not just the singer herself. Following a record deal, Sade's debut album Diamond Life (1984) was released. At the time of release in 1984, the album sold over four million copies globally, and currently stands at six million copies globally.
