Dr. Susan Love has said that changing the world is simply "a matter of trying." She has attempted to do just that, bringing hope and new treatments to women with breast cancer. Susan Margaret Love (February 9, 1948 – July 2, 2023) was an American surgeon, a prominent advocate of preventive breast cancer research, and author.[1] She was regarded as one of the most respected women's health specialists in the United States.[2] Love is best known for pioneering work fueled by her criticism of the medical establishment's paternalistic treatment of women. She was an early advocate of cancer surgery that conserves as much breast tissue as possible. She also was among the first to sound the alarm on the risks of routine hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal women.

Susan Margaret Love was born in Little Silver, New Jersey, on February 9, 1948.[3] She lived in Mexico and Puerto Rico as a child, as a result of her father's work as an industrial salesman.[4] Love enrolled at Fordham University after having spent five unsuccessful months at the School Sisters of Notre Dame.[5]

Susan M. Love, M.D. is an author, teacher, surgeon, researcher and activist. She graduated from SUNY Downstate Medical School cum laude in 1974. She did her surgical residency at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and became chief resident in 1979. In 1980, she opened a private practice in general surgery as the first woman surgeon on the staff of Beth Israel. In 1982, she joined the staff of the Dana Farber Breast Evaluation Clinic, the first comprehensive multidisciplinary center for breast care. In 1988, she founded the Faulkner Breast Center in Boston, which has received national recognition and continues to combine patient care with a research program and fellowship in breast surgery.
In 1992, Dr. Love was recruited by UCLA to found a multidisciplinary, comprehensive program addressing all aspects of breast care. The Revlon/UCLA Breast Center, under her direction, developed the first comprehensive practice guidelines on breast disease.
