National Scientist Vergara obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of the Philippines, his master's degree from University of Hawaii, and his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago majoring in Plant Sciences. He worked full time on rice from 1961 to 1995. He was the Director for Administration before his early retirement from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). He is still involved with rice but has shifted his interest in ornamental plants and the development of the Philippine Science Heritage Center or Salinlahi.

With a noble vision to help farmers and bring science and technology closer to the Filipino people he contributed enormously in improving rice varieties to produce richer harvests. He popularized the scientific basis of growing rice. He is the mind behind the creation of the IRRI Rice World and the philippine Science Heritage Center, two science centers that instill science-oriented culture among the public.

Dr. Benito S. Vergara (June 23, 1934 – October 24, 2015)[1] was a scientist in the Plant Sciences, and was conferred the rank and title of National Scientist of the Philippines in 2001, the highest honor bestowed by the Philippine Government for the work of Filipino scientists. Vergara was also behind the development of the Rice Museum and Learning Center, and is known for his extensive plant catalogues in rice and ornamental plant varieties, as well as his work starting the Farmer's Primer on Growing Rice, an illustrated manual explaining basic rice growing concepts.

Early life and education

Dr. Benito Vergara was born on June 23, 1934[2] to father Jose Vergara, a medical doctor, and Luisa Sibug Vergara, a nurse.[3] He was the youngest of seven children, and was raised primarily by his older sisters Betty, Lucy, and Belen Vergara who taught him household skills and chores.[3]
