Theater Director and Actor
A theater director and actor, he served as the director of the University Theater Center (C.U.E.D) at the Lebanese University from 1965 to 1968 and began work as a director at the Beirut Theater in 1966. In 1968, he co-founded the Beirut Atelier for Theater with Nidal al-Achkar, and he founded the Hakawati Theater in 1978. He worked as a professor at the Lebanese University's Institute for Fine Arts from 1966 to 2004 and as a professor at the Saint Joseph University from 1990 to 2016. In 1999, he founded the Shams Cultural Cooperative for Youth in Theater and Culture and he directed the Shams Youth Festival from 2000 to 2005. In 2005, he founded the Sunflower Cultural Centre. The recipient of numerous awards and honours, he was awarded Best Director and the Critics Award for Ayoub's Memoirs in the Cairo International Forum in 1994, the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2008 and the Order of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in 2013. Roger Assaf (Arabic: روجيه عساف; born in 1941)[1] is a Lebanese playwright, director and actor.[2]
He was born in Lebanon, son of Joseph Assaf and Rosette Brunas. His father was Lebanese and his mother was French. He studied in Frères School, Furn el Chebbak, then in Frères Jemmayzé. He studied medicine at Université Saint Joseph (USJ) for four years, but left studies to consecrate himself to acting.
At age 12, he landed an acting role in a play directed by Henri Khayyat. He established a university theatre center staging experimental plays. He collaborated in television stagings with Jean-Claude Boulos, Antoine Remé, Elias Matta and Antoine Machhour.
In 1963, he received a grant from the French Embassy in Lebanon to study acting in Strasbourg, France. In 1965, he was part of the renaissance of Lebanese theatre and in 1966, he was a co-founder of the College of Arts in the Lebanese University, establishing المركز المسرحي الجامعي (C.U.E.D). He was also one of the co-founders of Theatre de Beyrouth (in Arabic مسرح بيروت)

"مذكّرات أيّوب"، التي انطلقت في العام 1994، هي عرضٌ مسرحيٌّ يتمحورُ حول 20 ألف مخطوفًا ومخفيّا خلال الحرب الأهليّة. تسلّط هذه المسرحيّة الضوءَ على قضايا الحرب الطويلة الأمد التي لم تحلّ، والتي تبعتها سياسات ما بعد الحرب وذهنيّتها.

تخرّج روجيه عسّاف من المعهد العالي للدراسات المسرحيّة في ستراسبورغ في العام 1965، وساهم في تنشيط "المركز الجامعيّ للدراسات المسرحيّة"، وشارك في إنشاء مسرح بيروت حيث مثّل في أعداد عديدة وأخرج نصوصا مسرحيّة لـ"غابريال بستاني"
في العام 1968، أسّس مع نضال الأشقر "محترف بيروت للمسرح". وإلى جانب مهمّته كأستاذ الدراما في معهد الفنون الجميلة في الجامعة اللبنانيّة منذ العام 1977، أسّس عسّاف فرقة "الحكواتي" في العام نفسه.
حققت عروضه نجاحًا كبيرًا على الصعيدين المحليّ والدوليّ، لا سيّما مسرحيّات "من حكايات سنة 1936"، "أيّام الخيام”، و"مذكّرات أيّوب" و"سمر" و"جنينة الصنايع". في العام 1999، أسّس جمعيّة "شمس" التي تجمع المبدعين اللبنانيّين الشباب في مشروع تعاونيّ للتنشيط الثقافيّ. &nb
