Edgardo angara

Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara is the incoming secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), a position to which he was appointed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in July 2024.

Angara will succeed Vice President Sara Duterte, who concurrently served as education secretary but resigned from the DepEd amid a rift with Marcos. At the time of Angara’s appointment to the Marcos Cabinet, he had nearly a year left in his second six-year term as senator. He was first elected to the Senate in 2013, then reelected in 2019.

Prior to becoming senator, Angara was the representative of the lone district of Aurora in the House from 2004 to 2013. He was a co-author of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or K to 12, a program that must be reviewed by the Marcos administration, according to the President himself.

Also during Angara’s time as congressman, he was the spokesperson of the House prosecution panel in the impeachment trial of then-chief justice Renato Corona in 2012, giving him prominence on the national stage.

Senator Sonny Angara was elected senator in 2013, placing sixth with 16 million votes. He is the Senate’s leading voice in advocating for income tax reform to raise the take-home pay of workers, and to make the tax system a tool for economic progress, social justice and happier families.

As chairman of the ways and means committee, he has been a leading voice for the lowering of tax rates through the enactment of:

  • Republic Act 10653 that increases the tax exemption cap for 13th month pay and other benefits;
  • RA 10754 that exempts persons with disabilities (PWDs) from value added tax (VAT);
  • RA 10863 or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) which introduces reforms to Customs including the raising of the tax exemption ceiling of balikbayan boxes; and,
  • RA 10708 or the Tax Incen
