Domenico Modugno (January 9, 1928 – August 6, 1994) was an Italian singer and songwriter.

From a young age Domenico wanted to become an actor and in 1951, after his military service, he enrolled in an acting school. While still studying he had a role in a cinematographic version of Filumena Marturano by Eduardo De Filippo, and some other films.

In 1957, his song Lazzarella, sung by Aurelio Fierro, came second in the Festival della Canzone Napoletana, bringing him the first popularity.

In 1958 he took part to the Festival della Prosa, in Venezia, with the comedy La rosa di zolfo by Antonio Aniante. The turning point of his career came in that year, when he also participated to the Sanremo Music Festival, presenting, together with Johnny Dorelli, the song Nel blu dipinto di blu. Co-authored by him and Franco Migliacci, the song won the contest and suddenly became an enormous discographical success.

Nel blu dipinto di blu represented Italy in the 1958 Eurovision Song Contest, where it came third.

Born in Bologna in 1960, Giuseppe graduated ‘cum laude’ in piano studies at the age of 20 at the city’s Conservatoire. Thanks to his wide-ranging artistic and cultural training he has been able to offer interpretations both as a solo pianist and with chamber ensembles, reflecting an infinite number of musical tastes and influences. Giuseppe obtained his university degree in Letters in 1985 with a thesis on Johannes Brahms under the supervision of Franco Donatoni. He then studied Composition with Cesare Grandi and Alessandro Solbiati, and Conducting with Maurizio Benini.

He completed his piano studies at the school of Franco Scala, where he had the chance to work with Joerg Demus, Nikita Magaloff, Bruno Canino and Antonio Ballista among others. In 1983 he attended the course of the Accademia Chigiana in Siena in Guido Agosti’s class, not only obtaining his diploma but also gaining a grant as one of the best players. In 1984 he specialized in piano duets with Antonio Ballista at Città di Castello, and at the Festival of Nations he won the award for best pupil.

Domenico Modugno (Italian pronunciation:[doˈmeːnikomoˈduɲɲo]; 9 January 1928 – 6 August 1994) was an Italian singer, actor and, later in life, a member of the Italian Parliament. He is known for his 1958 international hit song "Nel blu dipinto di blu", for which he received the first Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. He is considered the first Italian cantautore.[1]

Early life

The youngest of four children, Modugno was born at Polignano a Mare, in the province of Bari (Apulia), on 9 January 1928.[2] His father, Vito Cosimo Modugno,[3] was a municipal police commander,[2] while his mother, Pasqua Lorusso,[3] was a housewife.[2]
