Gallitzin
, Russian princely family. Among many alternate spellings are Galitzin, Galytzin, and Galitsin. d. 1619, helped to enthrone the first false Dmitri but later joined the Shuiski conspiracy against him. Sent to offer the Russian crown to Prince Ladislaus of Poland, he was thrown into prison by King Sigismund III of Poland after refusing to help Sigismund obtain the crown for himself. He died in prison. 1643–1714, was the lover and chief counselor of Sophia Alekseyevna, regent during the joint reign of Ivan V and Peter I. After Sophia's downfall (1689), he was exiled to Siberia by Peter I. 1654–1714, was the tutor of Peter I and helped to depose Sophia Alekseyevna. He headed the government in Russia during Peter's first foreign tour. 1665–1737, held administrative posts, was ambassador to Turkey and Poland, and fought with distinction against Sweden in the Northern War. After the death (1730) of Peter II, he persuaded the supreme privy council to offer the throne to Anna, daughter of Ivan V, on the condition that she sign articles limiting her power. As the brilliant red sun sets amid the lush green ridges, poignant strains of a lone violin echo through the still evening air. The music – tonight it is Beethoven – is familiar and comforting to those who have heard it often. It sings of celebration and thanksgiving, wonder, and praise to God for the many blessings bestowed upon those who live and work in the .
Two hundred years after a Russian prince became a Catholic priest and brought organized religion to the Alleghenies, the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese is celebrating the spirit and works of a man who was a missionary, pastor and frontier philosopher-apologist; who founded dozens of parishes, developed the town of Loretto and cared for most of its inhabitants in a fashion so personal and varied as to border on the incredible.

Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin is forever bonded with the faithful of Altoona-Johnstown, and his roots are also linked with three of his equally remarkable contemporaries.
Bishop Mark pointed out the connections during a private Mass he celebrated on December 22 at the Prince Gallitzin Chapel House in Loretto. The day marked the 250th anniversary of the birth of the Prince-Priest.
It was one of two special Liturgies celebrated at the historic site in recent days as the diocese observed Father Gallitzin’s birthday and also celebrated the rich tradition of Christmas in Loretto.
Besides Father Gallitzin, poet William Wordsworth, explorer William Clark, and composer Ludwig van Beethoven were also born in 1770, Bishop Mark mentioned in his homily.
Like Clark (famous for the Lewis and Clark expedition), Father Gallitzin was an explorer and trailblazer who set his sights on the Allegheny Mountains.
Although he did not compose poetry like Wordsworth, Father Gallitzin had a way with words.
