Acharya JB Kripalani: Congress chief in 1947 who became a harsh critic of Nehru & Indira

Kripalani was well-known as a Gandhian and a socialist. Born in Hyderabad, Sindh, in 1888, he became the Congress president in 1946 and resigned from his position in 1947, soon after Independence, when equations within the party started changing. This was when the power of the Congress president was no longer the same as before. Soon, Kripalani turned into a strong critic of his own party.

Going against Nehru and Indira

Kripalani was a harsh critic of both Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi. He opposed Nehru’s policies, which he thought were against Gandhian values, and later opposed Indira’s policies too.

In 1972-73, he and other socialist leaders led movements across the country urging people to lead non-violent protests against Indira’s government.

Jivatram Bhagwandas Kripalani (11 November 1888 – 19 March 1982), popularly known as Acharya Kripalani, was an Indian politician, noted particularly for holding the presidency of the Indian National Congress during the transfer of power in 1947 and the husband of Sucheta Kripalani. Kripalani was an environmentalist, mystic and independence activist who was long a Gandhian socialist. He himself founded the Kisan Mazdoor Praja Party in 1951, that merged with the Socialist Party (India) to form the Praja Socialist Party the following year. Later, he joined the economically right wing Swatantra Party later in life.

He grew close to Gandhi and at one point, he was one of Gandhi's most ardent disciples. He had served as the General Secretary of the INC for almost a decade. He had experience working in the field of education and was made the president to rebuild the INC.
