Moritz Schulte

Moritz Schulte, born in 1998 in Braunschweig, Germany, began playing flute at the age of ten. After winning various prizes at national youth competitions, he commenced advanced flute study at the Lübeck College of Music under Prof. Angela Firkins in 2016 and then transferred to his current instructor, Prof. Erwin Klambauer, at the University of the Arts in Graz in 2020. He has been able to collect professional experience with orchestras such as the Ensemble Resonanz, Hofkapelle Meiningen, Vienna Concert-Verein and the Vienna Symphony. Various concert projects have taken him to England, Finland, and South Korea.

Scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Ad Infinitum Foundation enabled Moritz Schulte to take part in master classes by prominent flutists such as Peter-Lukas Graf, Andreas Blau (Berlin Philharmonic), Michael Martin Kofler (Mozarteum Salzburg) und Petri Alanko (Sibelius Academy). In November 2019, Moritz Schulte won first prize at the Severino Gazzelloni International Flute Competition in Pescara, Italy.

This page represents an ongoing project to list the principal flutists of the world’s orchestras, where possible from their inception. Generally speaking, we believe the information here is reliable when dates are provided, though the dates themselves might be slightly inaccurate. Particularly in the early years of orchestras, there seems to have been more flexibility of membership and position.

John began this list with information from Leonardo de Lorenzo’s “My Complete Story of the Flute” and Emil Medicus’ monthly magazine from the 1920s, “The Flutist”. Further information started coming in from a number of generous people associated with this flutelist as well as from some current members of orchestras. A boost to the knowledge about European orchestras came via Ardal Powell, from research presented in Amy Sue Hamilton’s 1984

Each year over two thousand talented musicians from all over Europe apply. Only the best applicants, who are determined through a strict selection procedure, are able to take part in the orchestra projects.

There they work with the most important conductors and soloists of our time and appear in renowned concert halls and leading festivals in Europe and all over the world.

In this manner members of the GUSTAV MAHLER JUGENDORCHESTER can accumulate experiences that are decisive for their musical development and further careers as professional musicians.
