The uncategorisable quartet are back to shake up Japanese music, but what’s new this time?
The band tricot has been pushing the envelope since their inception in 2010 – creating offbeat and exciting music that breaks pop rules and touring the world with major bands. Their 10th anniversary album, 10 (pronounced jyuu), was released last year to rave reviews, and their latest single いない (INAI) has just been released on June 2nd.
We catch up with the surprisingly down to earth band members, Ikkyu, Yoshida, Hiromi and Kida as they look over their long history, and their future dreams.
You’ve been described with lots of different terms, Alternative Rock, Math Rock, Indie Rock, Post Rock etc. How would you describe the music of tricot to an alien?
Ikkyu: I’ve been playing in this band for 10 years, and I still have no idea! Sorry!
Yoshida: I think that always come up with more and more alternative ideas.
Tell us about how you came up with your new single いない (INAI), and what it means to you.
Ikkyu: I wrote this song as the theme to the TV show Haru no Noroi Japanese math rock band Tricot (Japanese: トリコ, Hepburn: toriko, ) is a Japanese rock band from Kyoto. The band was formed in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Ikumi "Ikkyu" Nakajima, guitarist Motoko "Motifour" Kida, and bassist Hiromi "Hirohiro" Sagane. Known for their intricate rhythms[4] and visual identity,[2] they have released seven studio albums. Their musical style has been described by Rolling Stone as "adrenalized math rock sped up and given pop's candy coating".[1] Tricot was formed in Kyoto in 2010 by vocalist and guitarist Ikumi "Ikkyu" Nakajima, guitarist Motoko "Motifour" Kida, and bassist Hiromi "Hirohiro" Sagane.[5] Sagane is a native of the city, while Nakajima and Kida are from neighboring Shiga Prefecture.[2] Prior to forming Tricot, the three musicians played in various local bands in the Kyoto area, where they became acquainted with one another.[6] Kazutaka Komaki joined the band as drummer in May 2011.[7] Shortly after, Tricot established its own labe 1. tricot are a rock band from Kyoto, Japan created in 2010 by four talented musicians: Ikkyu Nakajima (vocals, guitar), Motoko "Motifour" Kida (guitar, vocals), Hiromi "Hirohiro" Sagane (bass, vocals) and Yuusuke Yoshida (drums). Previous drummer Kazutaka Komaki left in 2014 but they have had replacement live drummers including Yuumi of FLiP and Yamaguchi Miyoko of detroit7 and BimBamBoom. The band has developed a unique mix of elements using their fragile but dynamic vocal styles combined with thrilling, unpredictable and addictive song transitions as they explore dreamy post-rock-esque melodies and the complex rhythms similar to math rock. In 2012 and 2013, due to the well recieved singles, EPs and mini-album releases, they performed at several major festivals across Japan such as ARABAKI ROCK FEST, FUJI ROCK FESTIVAL, ROCK IN JAPAN, RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL, MONSTER BASH, WILD BUNCH FEST, SWEET LOVE SHOWER and more. Not long after this was the arrival of tricot's debut full-length album "T H E" which followed another long and successful
