Born December 5th, 1959, in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, Yoshimoto Nara is a Japanese artist known for his paintings and sculptures. His most famous and repeated subject is a young girl with large, captivating eyes. Nara’s paintings today regularly sell for millions of dollars at auctions, and the artist’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world, including the MoMA and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Nara grew up in the Aomori prefecture of Japan, which is in the northernmost part of the country’s main island, Honshu. He has described the influence that Western media has had on his art and life, noting that his exposure to Western music on the American military radio station “Far East Network” in Honshu influenced him artistically from a very early age. The figures in Nara’s paintings are the result of the artist facing the deepest part of his soul; with color and composition based in painting theory, repeatedly layering and erasing color from the canvas, so that what remains in the end is only the most earnest part that could not be pared away. An Introduction to Yoshitomo Nara

Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959 in Hirosaki, Japan, and trained as an artist in Japan from 1979 to 1987 and in Germany from 1988 to 1993. However, he pushed back against his formal training, rejecting elite, intellectual conventions, seeking instead to eliminate the “aloofness of high art” from his work. This places Nara in the Neo Pop style that arose in the 1990s as a “second coming” of the original Pop Art movement, an American rejection of academicism in the 1950s.^[1] Rather than an intellectual or philosophical engagement with his artwork, Nara mass-produces images in many forms to make them easily accessible and encourages a “naked emotional response” before his work. To make himself even more accessible as an artist, Nara publishes a blog called “Nara Voice,” which he uses as a platform on which he can be candid and open with his followers.^[2]

Nara is perhaps the second most renowned contemporary Japanese artist, after Takashi Murakami. While the two are friends and have collaborated, their styles are noticeably different.
