10 uses of mobile phones

Mobile phones have become such a part of people’s daily lives it’s difficult to comprehend society without them. The history of the mobile phone as we know it today is not lengthy. The groundwork may have been laid with mobile radios and radio-telephones, but the story of the modern mobile really starts in the early 1970s.

April 3 1973 – the first mobile phone call

The first ever mobile telephone call was made on 3rd April 1973 on a Motorola DynaTAC8000X. The call was made by Martin Cooper of Motorola; the recipient was Dr Joel S. Engel of Bell Laboratories. The DynaTAC8000X became the first commercially available mobile phone. It didn’t go on sale, however, until 1983 and carried a price tag of $4,000.

1979 – the first mobile cell network

It was Japan where the world’s first cellular phone network was launched. Nippon Telegraph and Telephone were responsible.

1982 – Europe joins the network

Before the Motorola DynaTAC8000X went on sale representatives from eleven European countries gathered to discuss the technical and political ramifications of establishing a digital cel

The development of the phones in our pockets happens at such a pace, keeping up to speed on their history can be tricky.

Events such as the Mobile World Congress - where the most remarkable advances in technology are on display, from phones we can wrap around our wrist to transparent laptop screens - show just how big a deal the industry is. Compared to other popular products, such as TVs and bicycles, mobile phones and smartphones are still so young; their story only began in the final part of the 20th Century. But it’s definitely a history worth calling up, as BBC Bitesize discovers.

When was the first mobile phone invented?

The first call made from a mobile phone happened on 3 April 1973 in New York City. It was made by the engineer Marty Cooper, who worked at the telecommunications firm Motorola and the call was to a rival at his company’s competitor, Bell Laboratories.

The prototype device Cooper called from was very different from the slim handsets we slip into our pockets and bags without a second thought today. Eleven years later, it finally went on public

Landmarks in mobile history

Mobile telephony has a long history that started off with experiments of communications from and to moving vehicles rather than handheld devices.

In later years, the main challenges were laid in the development of interoperable standards and coping with the explosive success and ever-increasing demand for bandwidth and reliability. By tracking how mobile phone statistics have changed over time, we are able to see how these devices have evolved into the smartphones we use today.

1926: The first mobile telephony service was offered to first-class passengers on the Deutsche Reichsbahn journeying between Berlin and Hamburg.

1946: The first calls were made on a car radiotelephone in Chicago. Due to the small number of radio frequencies available, the service quickly reached capacity.

1956: The first automated mobile phone system for private vehicles launched in Sweden. The device to install in the car used vacuum tube technology with a rotary dial and weighed 40 kg.

1969: The Nordic Mobile Te
