Gus “The Great Dane” Hansen was once a household name in the high-stakes poker scene. However, after a run of bad luck, The Great Dane stepped away from the game and is leading a much different lifestyle.


The Rise

Born in 1974, the Danish poker pro started his career in 1997, and at that point was already a high-level backgammon player. While attending UC Santa Cruz, as an exchange student, Hansen began going to the Ocean View Card Room in Santa Cruz to play poker.

Hansen began taking the poker world by storm in 2002 when he won the $10,000 Five Diamond World Poker Classic for $556,460. The following year, Hansen the 2003 L.A. Poker Classic for $532,490. From 2002 to 2012, Hansen racked up millions in live tournament winnings, it seemed like the man couldn’t be stopped.

His best cashcame in 2008 when he took second in the $25,000 World Poker TourChampionship Event for $1,714,800.

For those who don't know the name Gus Hansen, or his nickname The Great Dane, let's start with a little bit about his career. Gus is a 50-year-old poker player from Denmark who used to play tennis and backgammon before his poker career. However, there were few opportunities in backgammon, so he switched to poker while studying in California. He is also the author of several books.

Looking at his hendonmob, anyone will be impressed by his first three tournament results, back in 2002 and 2003. These are the first places and they are worth more than 1.2 million dollars. And they're not just any wins either, but straight WPT titles.

Gus has a lot of achievements to his credit, so it's only right to mention a few in this article. In 2004 he won a PCA tournament for $455,780, a year later he won the Superstars Invitational for $1,000,000, in 2007 he won Poker After Dark Season I for $120,000 and just a month after that he won the Aussie Millions Main Event for $1,192,919.

Gustav Hansen (born 13 February 1974) is a Danish professional poker player from Copenhagen, Denmark who has lived in Monaco since 2003.[3] In his poker career, Hansen has won three World Poker Tour open titles, one WSOP bracelet and the 2007 Aussie Millions main event, and was the season one winner of the Poker Superstars Invitational Tournament. Before turning to playing poker professionally in 1997, Hansen was already a world class backgammon player and a youth tennis champion.[4]
