Félix Labisse (March 9, 1905 – January 27, 1982) was a French Surrealist painter, illustrator, and designer.

He was born in Marchiennes. He divided his time between Paris and the Belgian coast from 1927.^[1] In Ostend he met James Ensor, who influenced his work. Beginning in 1931 he designed for the theater.^[1] His paintings depict fantastical hybrid creatures, and are often erotic. He painted the first of a series of blue women in 1960; among them is the Bain Turquoise.

He was the subject of a film by Alain Resnais, Visite à Félix Labisse (1947). In 1966 he was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. In 1973 his paintings were shown in a retrospective exhibition at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1982.

Born in Marchiennes, 9 March 1905; d Paris, 27 Jan 1982). French painter, illustrator and stage designer. He was of Flemish and Polish descent and worked in both France and Belgium. On a visit to Ostend in 1922 he met James Ensor, whose lifelong friendship he later commemorated in Bonjour M. Ensor (1964; Ostend, Mus. S. Kst.). In 1927 he set up his studio in Ostend, where he was associated not only with Ensor but also with Constant Permeke and Léon Spilliaert, and with the poets Henri Van de Putte, Jean Teugels and Michel de Ghelderode, and the film maker Henri Storck. He was self-taught and strongly influenced at first by Ensor. He sought to render both his own poetic reveries and the preoccupations of modern life through a technique of smoothly painted and strongly outlined violent colours. He specialized in images of a particular type of woman, at once strangely sensual and cold, whom he painted in blue and other exaggerated hues and who haunted his pictures like a mythical goddess, as in On the Other Side of the Grape-harvest Month (1980; Ghent, priv. col.). Felix Labisse was born in 1905 in Marchiennes, France. After the First World War in 1923 he moved to Heist-sur-Mer in Belgium and the following year he carried out his military service in Cambrai. In 1927 the family business went bankrupt and his family moved to Ostend. Labisse abandoned his career as a sailor to devote himself to painting. In 1928, he founded the Ostend Cinema Club with Henri Storck, Firmin Cuypers, Victor de Knop, Alfred Courmes, Robert Elleboudt, Désiré Steyns, Pierre Vandervoort and Henry Van Vyve. In July of the same year, he presented his first private exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art.
In 1930 he teamed up with Henry Van Vyve to found a literary and artistic magazine, Tribord, which published eight issues from late 1930 to 1931. In 1932 Labisse moved to Paris, where he became friends with some great names in French culture such as Jean- Louis Barrault, Robert Desnos, Antonin Artaud, Roger Vitrac and Germaine Krull.
