When was khufu born and died

Khufu (Cheops in Greek)

2566 BCE

Possibly the most famous Old Kingdom pharaoh, Khufu was the second pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty. His full name is Khnum-Khufu, or “Protected by Khnum.” The Greeks called him Suphis or Cheops. Existing records show that he could have reigned anywhere from 23 to 34 years; Manetho, a third century BCE historian, even suggested a reign of 63 years. He is believed to have extended the borders of Egypt into the Sinai.

Khufu is also generally believed to be the builder of the Great Pyramid of Giza, which is the largest pyramid ever built and the first in the Giza complex.

Egypt prospered under the pharaohs of the Fourth Dynasty, which is why they were able to fund their massive building projects. Khufu was succeeded by his son Djedefre, whose reign was quite short, and then by Khafre, another of his sons. Khafre was the builder of the second Giza pyramid.

Khufu (2589-2566 BC)was the 4th Dynasty (2613-2498) pharaoh who built the Great Pyramid of Giza. Originally, the Great Pyramid stood 481 feet (146.6 m) tall. Although commonly called Cheops (and also Suphis) because of the late Greek influence on Egypt, the name Khufu is the original ancient Egyptian name for this king as demonstrated by his own cartouche. He reigned for approximately 24 years.

Although the Great pyramid has such fame, little is actually known about its builder, Khufu. Ironically, only a very small statue of 9 cm has been found depicting this historic ruler. This statue, pictured above and below, was not found in Giza near the pyramid, but was found to the south at the Temple of Osiris at Abydos, the ancient necropolis.

According to various inscriptions, Khufu probably did lead military into the Sinai, and raids into Nubia and Libya.

Khufu was the son of another great pyramid builder, King Sneferu. Khufu’s mother’s name was Hetepheres.

Although King Sneferu was remembered as a benevolent and beneficent ruler, Khufu is believed by

The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most recognisable landmarks on Earth. As the crowning glory of the Giza necropolis, it was the first pyramid to be built at the site and stood as the tallest man-made structure on the planet for over 3,800 years

But who was the pharaoh who built it? Here are 10 facts about Khufu, the man behind the marvel.

1. Khufu belonged to the ruling family of the Fourth Dynasty

Born in the 3rd millennia BC, Khufu (also known as Cheops) belonged the large royal family that ruled Egypt during the Fourth Dynasty.

His mother is thought to be Queen Hetepheres I and his father King Sneferu, the founder of the Fourth Dynasty, though some researchers suggest he may have been his stepfather.
