Tusshar to play gangster in 'Shootout at Wadala'

The character will be based on slain gangster Sheikh Munir who was shot dead close to Gupta's bungalow in Versova.

Mumbai: On his birthday on November 20, Tusshar Kapoor paid a visit to director Sanjay Gupta's home. Little did he know that Gupta had an interesting gift to give him a role in a new film, 'Shootout At Wadala'. The character will be based on slain gangster Sheikh Munir, who, as it turns out, was shot dead close to Gupta's bungalow in Versova.

"It was my birthday gift for Tusshar. I've cast him as gangster Manya Surve's right-hand man Sheikh Munir. I called him home to give him a full narration of his character," said Gupta.

"That was a bizarre bit of coincidence I stumbled on recently," said Gupta about the fact that Munir was shot dead in front of his home in 1983. Shootout at Wadala is a 2013 Indian action-crime film[4][1] written and directed by Sanjay Gupta. The film stars Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Manoj Bajpayee, Tusshar Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Sonu Sood. It is a prequel to the 2007 film Shootout at Lokhandwala.[5] In the film, Manya, a diligent student, lands in prison for killing a gangster who attacked his brother, Bhargav, who eventually dies. Soon, Manya escapes jail and forms his own gang to seek revenge.

Based on the book Dongri to Dubai: Six Decades of the Mumbai Mafia by Hussain Zaidi, the film dramatises the encounter by Bombay police in which gangster Manya Surve was shot dead. It took place at the junction adjacent to Dr. Ambedkar College, Wadala, Bombay on 11 January 1982.

Shootout at Wadala was released on 3 May 2013 and received mixed reviews from critics, It grossed over ₹82 crore (US$9.5 million) against a budget of ₹65 crore (US$7.5 million).

His death in 1982 during an encounter with the Maharashtra police became known as the city's first recorded encounter killing.[1][2] However, the spate of encounter killings only increased in the late 1980s and further rose after the 1993 Mumbai bombings; a total of 622 alleged criminals were killed in police encounters from 1982 to 2004.[3][4]
