Jennifer Podemski is an award-winning actor and producer whose career has spanned over three decades. Born and raised in Toronto, Jennifer is of Israeli and First Nations heritage and has built a career, on both sides of the camera, dedicated to expanding Indigenous narratives. Her work has garnered international recognition and she has travelled across North America and Europe advocating on behalf of Indigenous perspectives in the media.
Well known for her starring role in Bruce McDonald’s acclaimed feature film Dance Me Outside (20th Anniversary), Jennifer has sustained an ongoing presence in front of the camera for more than 25 years.
Some of her most memorable performances include: The Rez, Riverdale, Degrassi TNG, The Border, Moose TV, and Sensitive Skin. Jennifer has also appeared in Sarah Polley’s Take This Waltz (TIFF 2012); Empire of Dirt (TIFF 2014/CSA Nominee 2015), Firesong (TIFF 2015); and the critically acclaimed hit TV series Blackstone (2016 APTN/Netflix). Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Toronto-born actor and producer Jennifer Podemski has been a mainstay of Canadian screens, beginning at 17 with her breakout turn in Bruce McDonald’s Dance Me Outside, and later roles in acclaimed TV series such as The Rez, Riverdale, Degrassi, and Reservation Dogs.
Since 1999 much of Podemski’s work has been behind the camera as a writer, director, and producer, where she has focused on stories that draw on her mixed First Nation (Anishinaabe) and Jewish (Ashkenazi) descent. She produced and starred in the 2013 film Empire of Dirt, which was nominated for five Canadian Screen Awards, including Podemski for best supporting actress; it went on to win for best screenplay, making Shannon Masters the first Indigenous woman to win a CSA in the category.
More recently, Podemski co-created the celebrated 2023 mini-series Little Bird with playwright Hannah Moscovitch, based on the story of a First Nations woman adopted into a Jewish family during the Sixties Scoop. She is currently

Of mixed Anishinaabe (First Nation) and Ashkenazi (Jewish) decent, Jennifer’s professional acting career began when she was 17. Her breakout role was Sadie, in Bruce McDonald’s iconic film, Dance Me Outside, a performance that garnered critical acclaim, solidifying her place in Canada’s film and television canon.
In 1999 Jennifer shifted her focus to producing as a way to address the lack of Indigenous representation in the film and television industry. She launched Big Soul Productions with Laura Milliken becoming Canada’s first Indigenous owned and operated, full-service film and television production and post production company. Big Soul Productions produced a variety of documentary television series, scripted short films and the award winning, multi-season, all Indigenous dramatic television series Moccasin Flats for Showcase Television and APTN.
