BIOGRAPHY
Oklahoma artist Matt Goad began his art career while working as a graphic designer and illustrator in the mid 90s. Woodblock printing and its hard edged graphic aesthetic helped inform his modern style which he would take into the realm of paintings in the 2000’s. Passionate about color, composition and telling a story, his geometric approach pulls viewers through a compositional narrative. His work is easily accessible to the public and enjoyed by many, young, old, and across cultural identities. Matt’s work is included in many private and public collections around the world, and he’s been featured in numerous art and design publications, websites and documentary productions including Print, Communication Arts, PBS’s Gallery America and Voksee’s Good to Know to name a few.
ARTIST INSIGHTS
How are your background and life experiences connected to your art?
As a youth my family moved across the US, almost yearly, eventually landing in the desert southwest. This upbringing, although somewhat unstable, gave me a unique perspective of the diverse nature and Dan was born and raised in California, and has lived on St. Simon’s Island, a small island off the coast of Georgia, since 1981. A self-taught naturalist and artist, he is very well traveled, capturing wildlife in its natural habitat and the art of its expression. Dan lived on the lush tropical island of Bali, Indonesia for four years. It was this time spent in Bali that propelled Dan to pursue a natural genre of outdoor paintings – flowers and wildlife. Dan believed the bird to be “nature’s most eloquent expression.” Specifically, it was with the marsh birds that Dan gained acclaimed recognition and popularity. His focus on such great birds as the osprey, pelican, heron, egret, ibis and others keep his work in demand in all over the world. He, along with Jasper Johns and Andy Warhol, were commissioned by President and Nancy Reagan to add to the White House art collection at the Smithsonian. His work is also featured in many private and corporate collections throughout the world and has appeared on the covers of national and international publications. Dan Goad is a naturalist and self taught artist with a love for the natural world. This world became a fascination and integral part of his being since childhood. He was particularly drawn to the beauty of birds, and has been quoted as calling them “nature’s most eloquent expression.” His work reflects his love for nature and the outdoors, combining a rare mix of talent, skill and dedication. It is what allows him to transform what he has seen, with all its beauty, because it is designed from a naturalist’s perspective. This love for the natural world can be seen manifested through the shine of his harmonious pallets, crafted with a loving point of view. Goad was raised in California and developed a love of surfing at the age of 23. He began searching for the “perfect wave” and this carried him to the lush, tropical island of Bali. This vacation turned into a four-year stay, allowing him the honor of living with a tribal chieftain and lots of surfing. Eventually he returned to California where he began dabbling in watercolors. He was soon discovered
