Liu jianhua biography

Liu Jianhua was born in 1962 in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province, China. In 1989, he graduated from Fine Art of Sculpture at the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute. He taught at Department of Sculpture in Yunnan Academy Fineof Arts University in Kunming from 1989 to 2004, before moving to thesince when he has been teaching at Department of Sculpture atin Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, where he has been teaching ever since. The artist nowcurrently lives and works in Shanghai, China. 

Liu Jianhua is one of China’s best-known contemporary artists who experiments with comprehensive mixed media. Liu’s porcelain and mixed media works reflect the economic and social changes in China as well as the problems that follow suit. His “Regular Fragile” series, first shown at the Chinese Pavilion, of the Venice Biennale in 2003, is composed of porcelain replicas of daily everyday objects that privilege appearance and symbolism over function. Biography

Adapting ancient traditions to contemporary art practice, Liu Jianhua is particularly significant due to his innovative use of porcelain. Born in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province in 1962, he studied sculpture at the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in the historical centre of Chinese porcelain production, graduating in 1989. Before that, he had worked at the Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain Sculpture Factory, immersing himself in the traditional craft of porcelain, before starting his own experimental practice. In 2017 his work was selected for the 57th Venice Biennale, ‘Viva Arte Viva’, and in 2016 ‘Collected Letters’ was shown in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, and ‘Trace’ in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Liu Jianhua was born in 1962, in Ji’an, China. He began his career in 1977 by working at the Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain Sculpture Factory. In 1985, he was admitted to the Fine Arts Department of the Jingdezhen Pottery and Porcelain College, majoring in Sculpture. 

Biography

After graduating in 1989, Liu went on to teach at the College of Fine Arts at the Yunnan Institute of the Arts. Since 2004, Liu has been a professor in the Sculpture Department of the Fine Arts School of Shanghai University. Creating sculpture and installations in porcelain, found objects, and other materials, Liu’s work responds to Chinese culture and material history within the context of globalization. Liu, together with artists Hong Hao, Xiao Yu, Song Dong, and curator Leng Lin, established the Polit-Sheer-Form Office group in 2005.
