In 2006 Carol Shea-Porter won her first elected office when she captured a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives from New Hampshire. Shea-Porter, a former social worker, was also the first woman to represent the Granite State in Congress. Her independently minded district was often a bellwether for national politics, and Shea-Porter ended up trading the seat in Congress with a political rival back and forth—the district flipped so often that one observer called it a “ping pong ball.”1 In the 113th Congress (2013–2015), Shea-Porter and her New Hampshire colleagues in the House and Senate made history as the first all-female congressional delegation.

Her extended family had deep roots in New Hampshire—her mother was a descendent of John Stark, the general who coined the phrase that would become New Hampshire’s state motto, “Live Free or Die”—and the family moved from New York to Durham,

Carol Shea-Porter (born 2 December 1952) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NH 1) from 3 January 2007 to 3 January 2011 (succeeding Jeb Bradley and preceding Frank Guinta), from 3 January 2013 to 3 January 2015 (interrupting Guinta's terms), and from 3 January 2017 to 3 January 2019 (succeeding Guinta and preceding Chris Pappas).

Carol Shea-Porter was born in New York City, New York in 1952 and grew up in the Seacoast Region of New Hampshire. She worked as a social worker and community college instructor in Colorado, Louisiana, and Maryland, and she worked for the Wesley Clark presidential campaign after returning to New Hampshire. In 2006, she went from being a liberal public activist to a member of the US House of Representatives, serving from 2007 to 2011, from 2013 to 2015, and from 2017. She retired in 2018.

Carol Shea, so ihr Geburtsname, besuchte bis 1971 die Oyster River High School in Durham (New Hampshire). Danach studierte sie bis 1979 an der University of New Hampshire. Anschließend war sie Sozialarbeiterin und leitete entsprechende Einrichtungen in New Orleans und Maryland. Sie half auch in New Orleans nach dem Hurrikan Katrina.

Carol Shea-Porter ist mit Gene Porter verheiratet. Das Paar lebt in Rochester.
