The Book of Jose
Published November 15th 2022
<3 There was some real violent heart wrenching revelations that was going on right in my backyard in The Bronx back in the day... I was so sheltered, I knew none of this behavior was happening in the streets so close to home! OMG! Audiobooking this was like listening to one long azz unfiltered/Explicit #RapSong! I went through some emotions listening to this--I had to take a break 4realz. I am real grateful that he revealed his struggles and the struggles of his friends and family with #MentalHealth #MentalIllness and #PersonalityDisorders #Addiction #Counseling and #SelfCare #Violence #Finances #Gambling..... As raw as he is, if you listen/read carefully--like with ALL of us, we are products of our environments (both nature and nurture influences) and for BIPOC folks we are stamped before birth. This is one incredible memoir and is way too much for me to express how essential this read is especially for Men and Boys of color. What a Saga! #MustRead

José Limón
A captivating illustrated autobiography of the early years of a major American choreographer.
Both as a dancer and a choreographer, José Limón electrified audiences from the1930s to the 1960s. With his striking looks and charismatic presence, he was American modern dance's first male star. Born in Culiacán, Mexico, in 1908, the eldest of twelve children, he came to the United States when he was seven. In 1928, after a year at UCLA as an art major, he left for New York. Here, he attended his first modern dance concert and discovered his destiny.
He spent the 1930s with the Humphrey-Weidman group. Then, in the 1940s, after a stint in the army, and with Doris Humphrey as artistic advisor, he formed one of the outstanding modern dance companies of the postwar era. His greatest works — The Moor's Pavane, La Malinche, The Traitor, A Choreographic Offering, There is a Time, Missa Brevis — extolled a humanism that endeared them to audiences the world over. Although Limón died in 1972, all these dances remain in the Limón Dance Company's active repertory.

This fascinating book charts his rise from relatively humble beginnings as assistant coach to Sir Bobby Robson, to become the most sought-after club manager in Europe.
